Busting the MSP Myth That Appearance Doesn’t Matter

February 15, 2018 By Lisa Shorr Leave a Comment

You have seven seconds to make a first impression. What message do you want your appearance to convey to customers and prospects?

I participated in an initial sales meeting once that “looked” like this: The first salesperson sat in my conference room chair in a too-tight button-down untucked shirt, exposing bulging buttons and abdominal hair. His female colleague wore jeans and a tank top that was distractingly low. The only professional aspect of her outfit was a snug black blazer.

If you were in that meeting, where would your attention be? Bulging belly, cleavage, or their pitch?  [Read more…] about Busting the MSP Myth That Appearance Doesn’t Matter

I recently facilitated a lively workshop where I spoke to several women about the importance of understanding our body types to dress for success.  We have no more than 7 seconds to make a great first impression – how we present ourselves nonverbally sets the tone for victory.

Before we jumped into the second part of my workshop, fun with accessories, I educated the attendees about body shapes and ideas on how to select the right clothing item to enhance her silhouette.   Although each woman has her own unique body shape, we all typically fall into one of four primary categories:  Triangle (smaller shoulders, wider hips –sometimes referred to as pair shaped), Inverted Triangle (broad shoulders with small hips and thin legs), Rectangle (no defined waist, shoulders and hips same width apart), Hourglass (shoulders & hips align with a clearly defined waist – think Marilyn Monroe!).   The hourglass is the most balanced shape.  The goal for the other shapes is to select pieces that create visual alignment. The Ladies! Debra Smith, Gabi, Me and Tziporah Salamon

My daughter and I took a “Rhode Island “ style road-trip recently. We traveled 25 minutes north, in the rain, to visit the high-style boutique Clad In in Providence’s swanky Wayland Square. I went on a mission of sorts. As distinctive and eclectic a mix as Clad In’s merchandise is, so too were their weekend guests – Debra Smith, a textile artist who works with vintage kimono fabrics and legendary stylist and style icon Tziporah Salamon.

My 11-year-old daughter Gabi is following in my footsteps! She has maintained for quite some time that she wants to be in the Fashion Industry. So with intention and excitement Gabi and I stepped into Clad In, placed our umbrellas at the door and introduced ourselves to 2 very engaging artists. Debra Smith was immediately inviting. I have to admit, Tziporah’s commanding sense of self and striking style had me a bit awe-struck. Once I took a deep breath, I regained my composure and engaged in what turned out to be an unexpectedly educational Sunday afternoon!

Here is what I learned: [Read more…] about Our Body as a Canvas – Meeting Debra Smith & Tziporah Salamon

Protecting and Storing Your Clothes for Winter

December 12, 2013 By Lisa Shorr Leave a Comment

Recently, I wrote an article called Timeless Tips to Transition your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall for Trade Secrets Magazine. I love the soft fabrics and bright colors and patterns of summer clothes. My article shared many of the tricks I use to extend my summer wardrobe just a bit longer.

Alas, winter has arrived and layering those delicate fabrics is just not warm enough. It is time to switch to the cozier more wind resistant fabrics such as wool, suede, corduroy, fleece and cashmere. [Read more…] about Protecting and Storing Your Clothes for Winter
